WI-FI FAQ

Don't know much about Wi-Fi? Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions:

Q: What do I need to access the Internet at a Wi-Fi hot spot?
A: A laptop or other type of computer, including many types of hand-held devices such as iPhones and BlackBerrys, equipped with a wireless card. All new laptops and most desktops now come equipped with the card. For older computers, the cards may be purchased from most computer-equipment stores for $40 to $90.

Q: What can I do at a Wi-Fi hot spot?
A: Surf the Web, check your e-mail, update your blog, IM with your friends, and, since Simply Bits' hotspots are broadband connections, you also can make free VoIP (Voice over IP) phone calls and play online games.

Q: Are my data and e-mail secure at a Wi-Fi hot spot?
A: You should never conduct unsecured transactions at public Wi-Fi hot spots that include any account or password information using file transfer protocol, e-mail or the Web. When possible, use SSL - Secure Sockets Layer, a commonly used protocol for Internet security - for e-mail, or read your e-mail with a Web browser using an SSL connection.

Q: Do I need to purchase goods or services before I can get free access in a Wi-Fi hot spot?
A: Most hotels, motels and resorts restrict free Wi-Fi access to guests only, especially if the access is in guest rooms only. Although most other businesses that offer Wi-Fi do not require a purchase, it is always appreciated. If you are on the premises for the Wi-Fi connection and don't intend to make a buy anything, you should limit your stay. Also, be considerate and give up your seat if someone who has made a purchase needs a place to sit.
